RETAINERS/RETENTION

Now that the braces are removed and "active treatment" is complete, there is still one more important step called retention. This final stage of treatment provides the finishing touches to help ensure a lifetime of beautiful smiles.

Retainers are designed to hold teeth in their corrected position until the bones and gums adapt to this change. Patients must wear retainers exactly as instructed or teeth may revert to their original positions and reverse the benefits of wearing braces.

The required length of time one wears a retainer varies case by case and the retention process does take time. Some children and adults may need retainers for an extended period to make sure teeth do not shift. In some cases, permanent retention may be necessary. At Batastini Orthodontics, we select the best option based on the individual case.

KEYS TO SUCCESS:
When it comes to the retention stage, results are truly in the patient's hands. For retainers to be effective, patient must:

  1. Wear the retainer
  2. Keep the retainer clean
  3. Handle the retainer with care

Remember, teeth need time to adapt to their new position. Give them that time and the reward will be a lifetime of healthy, beautiful smiles.
