Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) disorder (TMJD, TMJ or TMD), or TMJ syndrome, is an umbrella term covering acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint, which connects the mandible to the skull. The disorder and resultant dysfunction can result in significant pain and impairment. Since the temporomandibular joint connects the mandible to the skull, disorders of the teeth can contribute to TMJ disfunction. The most important factor is the way the teeth meet together specifically when the mouth closes. Premature abnormal contact of the back teeth causes a forward slide of the lower jaw traumatizing the TMJs. The use of an upper and/or lower splint may prevent further injury.
